Easy to Say

It’s easy to tell others
“be humble.”

Until you experience a moment,
when it feels as if “being humble”
will bring about
your own demise.

It’s easy to tell others
“listen.”

Until you experience a moment,
when you feel so unheard
that you want the other person to listen
first.

It’s easy to tell others
“appreciate.”

Until you experience a moment,
when what you appreciate
is not what they want to feel appreciated
for.

Sustainable Empathy

Compassion can indeed be taxing because it often motivates us to want to rescue others. Compassion seems to inspire the image of the Atlas that has the world on his shoulders. That’s not very sustainable. I’m sure you’ve heard how care givers often burn out.

Empathy, on the other hand, is about creating connection without judgment. No judgment of good or bad and right or wrong, for example. This means nobody is trying to rescue anyone. It is about remaining in a creative state. Sometimes this comes naturally. Others times this doesn’t come naturally. For us to realize empathy in situations where this doesn’t come naturally we often need the support of others. Otherwise we can get stuck in a rut having difficulty empathizing. (i.e kinda like waiting alone for creative inspiration to strike vs brain storming with others for the creative inspiration) So to get unstuck, a provision of an effective support system is critical. That support system can make empathy quite a bit more sustainable.

A Move Ive Seen

If we can predict
what someone will say
in response to us,
and that response is negative
it is no wonder we will not act

Each and every time you respond to
something your employee says
that image is store in the person’s memory
repeat the same thing enough times
and it’s as if there is no chance of. different response.

The New

When people encounter
something new
or unexpected.

Some
will dislike it.

Because it won’t fit
their expectations.

So to reduce their dissonance,
they’ll come up with ways
to make it fit
by suggesting ways
to fix it.

But then
some
will like it.

But they’ll be unable
to articulate
why.

Because it won’t fit
their expectations,
either.

The difference
isthe latter group of people
will imagine a context
in which the new will fit
while the former
will try to fix the new
to fit the existing context.

When there is more of the latter group
than the former,
a new genre
a new platform
a new era
begins.

If there is more of the former group
than the latter
a cult classic
is born.

Regardless,
an artist
makes art
that defies evaluation.
